The total length of the Great Wall of China is
found to be 21,196 km or 13,171 miles. The wall, which is a series of fortifications
made of stone, brick and rammed earth, is generally built on an east-west line,
mostly as protection for the Chinese Empire against intrusions by military and
nomadic groups. Many
parts of the wall were built as early as the 7th
century B.C. Most of the existing wall was reconstructed during the Ming
Dynasty.
