         The total length of the Great Wall of China is found to be 21,196 km or 13,171 miles. The wall, which is a series of fortifications made of stone, brick and rammed earth, is generally built on an east-west line, mostly as protection for the Chinese Empire against intrusions by military and nomadic groups. Many

parts of the wall were built as early as the 7^th century B.C. Most of the existing wall was reconstructed during the Ming Dynasty.
