12,900 years ago marks the beginning of the Younger Dryas period, when there was a rapid climate change to a colder, dryer climate. Researchers have now linked that climate shift with an impact in Quebec of an asteroid or comet. The event wiped out many large mammals and may have forced humans to begin growing their own food rather than relying on hunting big game.
